Caminos de Paz
Editorial design for
World Vision
Problem and starting point
World Vision, an international Christian organisation with the mission to foster the protect children’s rights and promote their wellbeing, needed to update a South American workbook called Caminos de Paz (Peace Paths or Peace Roads) to make it more accessible, legible and refresh its general design.
This posed some issues as the original source material was lost and only PDF copies remained, which were not in the best shape. I was charged with getting the material out of the PDF, looking and spotting for inconsistencies (as some of the language didn’t match the Dominican context) and sourcing appropriate illustrations to support the text.
Process
I started by having a meeting with World Vision’s team to set expectations and have a clear idea of their goals.
Upon getting the file, I set about finding the best way to break apart the PDF and recover the text. This was an especially difficult task which lead to it being converted to a Word file and then minuciously copying the text page by page because of several formatting issues made it unreliable to trust that all of it would be usable at once.
I then redesigned the book from scratch selecting specific colours for each chapter, designing the worksheets, tables, chapter covers, selecting and adapting dozens of illustrations and preparing the 325-page book for printing.
Results
The result was a physical and print book that serves as a guide for children and teenagers participating in World Vision’s activities designed to foster a culture of peace, development and well-being in them that seeks to reduce violence and violent reactions as a way to solve conflicts, as well as helping children identify violent situations and patterns.
